Recent research data released by the research team of Wuhan University of Science and Technology has shown that moderate consumption of black tea, green tea, or oolong tea is associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes (T2DM). According to the data presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for Diabetes Research, drinking more than four cups of tea a day over an average of 10 years can reduce the risk of T2DM by 17%.
The study was conducted on over 1.07 million participants from 19 cohort studies in eight countries. The data included information on the type of tea consumed (black tea, green tea, or oolong tea), tea drinking frequency, gender, and country of origin.
The results of the study indicated a linear relationship between drinking tea and the risk of developing T2DM. Every additional cup of tea consumed per day was found to decrease the risk of developing T2DM by approximately 1%.
“Specifically catechins,

cells from damage caused by free radicals. ”
Tea is a rich source of antioxidants, specifically catechins, which are known to reduce inflammation and protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. These properties of tea, along with its ability to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, make it a beneficial drink for those looking to reduce their risk of developing T2DM.
However, it is important to note that excessive consumption of tea, like any other beverage, can have negative effects on health. It is crucial to consume tea in moderation, alongside a healthy diet and lifestyle.
